Sunmist watched her apprentice carefully. He was sizing her up, which was good because that is what she told him to do. If I were him, she thought, I'd be looking for some leeway. She let him get close enough to land a blow, looked like he was trying for her side. She darted around him dodging his blow and tackling him, jumping off quickly so as he didn't have her exposed underbelly to his disposal.

Redpaw growled softly and jumped quickly to his paws and rounded on Sunmist. This time, he charged straight at her and tried to get under her belly so he could raise to his full height and knock Sunmist off her balance. He didn't wait to see he was successful, he just darted away and whirled around, jumping towards her to aim another blow at her flank.

Sunmist was shocked. Feisty little thing, she was pleased. How long had it been since she herself actually trained in battle with him? She hadn't time to think before she was winded, but not knocked over. He still had some muscle and weight to put on before he could knock her over completely. She staggered, regaining her balance in time to see her apprentice jumping. She rolled over exposing her underbelly, except for her paws were coiled and ready to kick. She kicked him over, flipping herself right side up before her apprentice hit the ground, and pinned him there. " Very good." She panted, " Let's-let's try defensive now."

After Sunmist pinned him, he squirmed for a moment and hissed playfully before staying still. He pulled himself out from under her and sat up, shaking dirt and dead leaves from his pelt and sitting down. "Right. Defense," he echoed her and sat there, waiting for instructions.

Without warning, the large she-cat bolted at her apprentice, toppling him over and pinning him to the ground with both front paws. " Always watch your opponent! Never let down your guard!" Sunmist ordered, watching his every move. She jumped off him and attacked once more, this time using her paws to bat him around the head, hoping to baffle and overwhelm him.

Redpaw let out a confused squeak when Sunmist tackled and pinned him. He grunted and rolled over, quickly rising to his paws once she let him up. He nodded to show he understood and waited. He didn't have to wait long before she came at him again. He was confused for only a moment before he ducked under her paws and danced around her side, swiping at her as he passed.

She hadn't expected Redpaw to act so readily, and was shocked as he struck her flank. Hissing she whirled around and, instead of attacking, began trying to intimidate and confuse Redpaw. Sunmist spat and growled, lowering herself to the ground and began swiping at her apprentice, intentionally missing. First at the head, the flanks and then the chest, her paws hadn't even met the tips of Redpaw's fur. " Plan it out! Can you tell me what I am doing to you?" She growled, taking another swipe at him and turning so as she was on his left side now, not face to face.

Redpaw didn't seem to notice that Sunmist was purposely missing him and was hopping from side to side to avoid her blows. "No...I have no idea," he hissed, trying to figure out her strategy. He searched his mind, but kept drawing a blank. Finally, he just tried jumping back and out of her reach.

Sunmist was looking very pleased with herself, having been walking alongside the river, turning to the toms side was now driving him toward it. He'll learn, she thought, taking more swipes at her apprentice. Suddenly he jumped backward. Sunmist immediately stopped, standing very still now, and watched through amused eyes.

Redpaw looked shocked for some reason before he realized that when he'd jumped backwards, he'd jumped into the river and was now standing in water that came up a couple inches above his paws. He blinked, staring at the water swirling around his legs as if it was a foreign object and then snapped back, walking calmly out of the water and regarding his mentor carefully just in case she decided the lesson wasn't quite over yet.

Sunmist purred loudly. " What did you learn today, my dear apprentice?" She asked, almost mockingly. She intended on going on a hunting expedition later, something she was a little more or less better at than fighting. On a more serious note, she said, " Redpaw, remember that just because it is against the warrior code to attack, let alone kill, a meddicine cat..." She paused thinking about a legend she'd heard about some cat who'd killed a Thunderclan meddicine cat moons and moons ago, " Remember that, it doesn't mean that they wont try. You need to be able to defend yourself."

Redpaw looked at Sunmist and sat down, gingerly, almost reluctantly, curled his tail around his soggy paws. Then he focused on her, his gaze serious as her tone changed. The thought had occured to him that he might be safer as a medicine cat because he wasn't going to be out fighting like warriors were, but then he realized that his mentor was right. He knew that the warrior code hadn't stopped warriors from trying to attack medicine cats. Though he'd never heard of an instance where one had actually been killed. He nodded once she was finished speaking. "I understand," he meowed with a small bow of his head to reinforce his statement.

Sunmist smiled, purring loudly. "Good. Now," She walked over to him, grooming a little bit of fur that was sticking out just a bit on the top of his head. He was a mess. " Go get yourself groomed. You look like a hedgehog." She teased. Rolling around and fighting had gotten her fur fluffed out to, so she began to straighten herself out as well. " What do you want to do next?"

"I do?" Redpaw asked, tilting his head and then couldn't resist stomping around, imitating one of the snuffling little creatures. But then maturity caught up to him and he stopped and gave himself a quick grooming, still not perfect, but better than before.
"Maybe we could practice hunting later or..." he'd almost suggested gathering herbs, but they'd already done that today so he stopped. "Nevermind," he added casually.

Sunmist purred amusedly as her young apprentice stomped around, trying to imitate the animal which she had described him to be. Suddenly he decided that he was too cool for that kind of 'immature' behavior. She agreed.
" Hunting..." She echoed distantly. Should they hunt? Hmmm...She looked at camp around her, wondering if it would be responsible of her to go out. " Umm-" "Sunmist?"
Sunmist whirled around, coming face-to-face with Runningfern. " Runningfern, whats wrong?"
" I ate some bad prey, I think. My stomach is being torn to shreds..." " Right, um, just come into the den, then."She turned to Redpaw apologetically. " Could you run ahead and get me something for Runningfern's stomach ache?"
