Abnormal Beasts
The Change
In the year 2089, scientists began work on the infamous Immunity Shot, planning to have it completed in 2099 as a "new-century acheivement."
It was designed to make participants immune to any type of sickness of injury: bones would be hardened to the strength of a diamond; immune systems boosted to their maximum. The scientists were sworn to secrecy, as were the human test specimens who mysteriously vanished during the nigh. Of course, these people were nobodies with no or very few family members and friends, so no one noticed their abscences... mostly.
But the secret leaked out through some un-loyal scientist's loquacious mouth. By 2098, this new Shot was all over the screens of the hover-TVs floating around the cities, both large and diminutive. The re-known scientists talked openly about it, bragging about new exploits and the such. Soon, the news was all over the World, and all the races were lining up at the local doctor's office th sign their name on the rosters for the new Shot.
The only thing that the Shot couldn't stop was a natural death, but ths didn't stop the People from throwing huge parties and attending balls, called Joy Bashes. After all, this was one of the greatest thing ever, right? All the Governments came together and passed the first-ever Global Law, which said that all people and animals were to have this Shot. No one complained, because it was such a great thing.
All types of animals were now living in zoos that sprawled hundereds of acres. These zoos were constructed to place the animals that they took land away from in. Meaning, if a city expanded or a new one was built, People would catch the animals living there and give them to the local zoo, so they could survive.
But some places were unbuildable, like the Himation Island, resting off the South Coast of California, America. A natural bridge of land connected the Isle to California and the underwater Baja California, which still belonged to Mexico. It forked in the middle to reach both places, but the paths were becoming overgrown from unuse. Himation Island is as large of man, but is stretched out like Baja. This gave it its name, for it was somewhat long and flowing like the Ancient Greek shawl. It is covered in all different terrains, from desert to rocky mountainsides, from grassy valleys to sunny beaches. The wiser animals have fled here, from squirrels to wolves. Strange enough, horses prefer to live in captivity, as do large and small cats. The dominating preditor here is deffinatly the wolf.
The scientists began to speak about a new something in the Shot: an activation date. "The people can now start getting the shot, but it will not be activated until New Year's Eve, so everyone can enjoy health at the same time," is what they say. The People have no prolem with this, as they completely trust them. So everyone gets the shot as soon as possible, and December 31st 2099 soon comes around. The People are positively bursting with eagerness for the Shot to kick in, and prepare for the evening at a brisk and happy pace. They watch their clocks closely, and at 11:30 p.m. they begin gathering infront of their Town Hall. They are practically jumping up and down as 11:55 comes. 11:57... 11:58... 11:59... a great cheer went up as the town clock struc 12:00 midnight, soon followed by screams of horror. These screams could be heard everywhere by everything.
The People look as themselves in terror as they disolve into microscopic genes. Animals also call out in fright, but not the life on Himation Island, no, because they were smart enough to get away.
The wailing lasted until 12:15 a.m., but stopped suddenly as they were completely consumed and blown away on the wind currents. The genes settled in the water, sseperating into groups of human and animal.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the dawn of 2100, all the animals of Himation, still haunted by the screams, head down to their watering holes. Lapping up the water, the wolves alone begin to feel strange. Looking at their reflections and each other, they saw rapid transformations. On the west Side of the island, they began growing manes of hair. They accuired human half-human vocal chords, enabling them to still howl and bark, but also speak. On the East side, the wolves began to esperience more animalish changes: Bat's wings, squirrel's tails, and cat feet.
Gaping at themselves, they went back to their dens, shocked into silence. Questions ran through their heads, "Why weren't the other animals infected?" "What has happened?! What am I changing into?!" and the like.
By that evening, they were completely transeformed, racing around in terror, wanting their old selves back.
But they would not get it, for they had become the Abnormal Beasts.
