The crisp morning air allowed your breath to be seen. Deathstar stretched her muscles as they where stiff from waking to a cold morning. Yawning she trotted out into the camp clearing to take a look at the awakening of her clan. A bird called out at first alone but more began to join in. The sky wasn't quite at it bluest giving it a feeling of frost. This particular day Deathstar was looking for someone. Her apprentice she felt a wave of anticipation to evaluate her new student. But where was she?. She blinked and headed in the direction of the Apprentice den hoping to catch her there.

Kawee, kaweeeee!! Sapphirepaw blinked her eyes open slowly. Then, she remembered that today was her first lesson with Deathstar! The sleepiness evaporated like mist in the sun as she stretched and yawned hugely. She gave her soft blue-gray fur a quick grooming and twitched her ears at the bird calls outside. She sighed contentedly. Her mother used to tell her about birds a lot. Shaking herself again, Sapphirepaw bounded out of the den, straight into her new mentor! Er, heh heh, good m-morning D-Deathstar!!

Deathstar smiled and said "Come now we must see what you know about hunting". She headed toward the entrance her spirits high. They traveled deep into Shadowclan territory befour Deathstar turned around and asked "What do you smell". The forest air was at its peek here there was plenty of scents to smell. She stretched as she waited for an anwser.

Sapphirepaw raised her head and opened her mouth slightly and took a deep sniff. She cocked her head and her ears twitched. I... I smell you, pine leaves, and...a vole! Or, is it a mouse? She crossed her eyes and looked at Deathstar. Vole and mouse smell the same to me, but I can feel little paws scrabbling the ground, so it might be a mouse.

"Vole and mouse are very close in smell but there a bit different" She sniffed in and smiled "Correct its a mouse, Voles are mostly found in rocky area's like near the lake". Then her eyes gleamed as she crouched down and whispered "Now its your chance to show me how you think you can get that mouse". She should do well its instincts after all. Deathstar was interested in finding weather her apprentice was a fighter, a hunter or gifted as both.

She smiled. It was time to prove her skill.Hmmm...a mouse can hear you before it smells you, so I should step lightly and try to avoid stepping on any undergrowth. She pinpointed the mouse, moving her ears like radars and taking in the scent. At last, she found it scrabbling under a leaf. She swiftly padded to the said leaf, trying to put her weight evenly on all paws. Going slowly, she froze as the scabbling stopped...and continued again. Sapphirepaw fixed her eyes on the leaf, and once she got in range, she pounced. She felt the mouse in her paws and she swiftly dispatched a bit to it's neck. The mouse went limp. Sapphirepaw carried her catch proudly to Deathstar.

She watched closely dark eyes did not waver. She watched her approach with satisfaction as the apprentice did an excellent job she was a fine hunter. She let a smile pull at her lips as Sapphirepaw came back proudly. "Well done' deathheart said. She then walked a little ways taking in scents with her mouth for a better find. Then she turned around her apprentices wondering if she was ready for the challenge."There us a sparrow near see if you can catch it" she whispered. If she caught it then there would be no bought in Sappirepaw's hunting skills. A sparrow was very sensitive and it hid in the dark.

Sapphirepaw dropped the mouse and took a deep breath at where her mentor was pointing. Sure enough, it was a sparrow. She frowned. This wasn't going to be as easy as catching the mouse. Sparrows were more sensitive to sounds, so she would have to be very careful. She opened her mouth slightly to acurately find the sparrow's location. It was somewhere in the darkness of a medium-high branch of a pine tree. Her pupils dilated as they stared intently at the spot. Ah, I'm going to have to rely on instinct more than sight and smell, now. I can't see exactly where that bird is, but I can guess by it's scent and the sounds it's making. Sapphirepaw walked slowly, placing her paws carefully to avoid any twigs or such. Her blue eyes fixed on her guessing spot and she crept to the base of the tree. The leaves rustled as a breeze passed by. She stopped, then prepared to leap, backing a few pawsteps away. Her muscles tensed, then she jumped to the bough. The bird tried to fly, in a whirl of feathers, but by a lucky stroke, Sapphirepaw extended her claws and snagged it's claw and pulled it down. Dispatching it with a quick bite, she lept down and turned to face Deathstar, her sides heaving, but happy.

Deathstar kept her eyes on her apprentice and watched her expertly catch the sparrow. She smiled and let her pride show."Congratulations" she said cheerfully she noticed that Sapphirepaw was heaving for air so she waited a few moments for her to regain her strength the said "Thats it for today let get going" She got up and started walking leaving Shappirepaw ro get the prey she had caught. She was glad that her apprentice was talented she couldn't wait to test her fighting skills.
